Striped pit scale

Asterolecanium striatum

Description

Striped pit scale (scientific name: Asterolecanium striatum) is a member of the family Asterolecaniidae within the order Hemiptera. These small insects are known as scale insects, specifically pit scales, which are characterized by their ability to create small pits or depressions in the bark of their host plants, often accompanied by protective waxy tests.

The host range for this pest includes various hardwood trees and woody ornamental shrubs. Oaks and maples are among the primary targets for this species. The insect tends to inhabit the branches and stems, where its presence can go unnoticed for long periods until the plant begins to show visible signs of decline or poor canopy density.

The life cycle involves a dispersal stage known as a crawler, which is the only mobile phase of the insect after the egg hatches. Once a suitable feeding site is located, the crawler settles down, inserts its mouthparts into the plant tissue, and begins to develop its characteristic protective covering. This sedentary lifestyle makes them resilient to many contact-based pesticides.

Damage caused by Asterolecanium striatum is primarily due to the extraction of essential plant fluids. Chronic infestation leads to stunted growth, discoloration of the foliage, and the formation of necrotic areas on the bark. Furthermore, the feeding sites may act as entry points for various fungal and bacterial diseases, significantly weakening the plant's natural defense systems.

Management requires a integrated approach. During the dormant season, horticultural oils can be effective in smothering overwintering stages. During the growing season, timing is crucial: systemic insecticides should be applied specifically during the crawler emergence window. Regular pruning of heavily infested branches is essential to reduce the overall population pressure in the garden or forest stand.
