Pit scale
Asterolecanium ungulatum
Description
Asterolecanium ungulatum, commonly known as a type of pit scale, is a species of sap-sucking insect within the family Asterolecaniidae (Order: Hemiptera). These insects are recognized by their unique physiological adaptation where the female creates a distinct, claw-shaped test or cover that anchors her to the bark of the host plant throughout her adult life.
The host range of this pest primarily includes various species of oak (Quercus). Due to their cryptic nature and ability to blend in with the texture of the bark, infestations often go unnoticed until the damage becomes severe. They prefer the branches and thin stems of young to middle-aged trees, where the bark is relatively soft and accessible.
The life cycle of the species is characterized by high fecundity. The females lay eggs under their protective test, which hatch into mobile crawlers. These crawlers represent the only active stage of the pest, moving to fresh bark to establish new feeding sites. Once a site is selected, the insect inserts its mouthparts into the plant tissue and ceases movement, permanently tethered to the host.
The damage caused by Asterolecanium ungulatum is largely due to the continuous extraction of plant phloem sap. This feeding process results in localized pitting, bark deformation, and the development of cracks. Severe infestations can cause leaf yellowing, stunting of shoot growth, and branch dieback, ultimately making the tree more susceptible to secondary fungal pathogens and environmental stress.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this pit scale:
- Regular inspection of bark surfaces during the late winter and spring seasons.
- Pruning and immediate disposal of heavily infested branches to reduce the pest population density.
- Application of dormant oils to suffocate overwintering stages before the growing season begins.
- Targeted use of systemic insecticides during the peak crawler emergence phase for maximum efficiency.
- Promoting tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil care to mitigate the impacts of sap-sucking insects.
