Asterolecanium vittatum is a species of scale insect belonging to the family Asterolecaniidae, order Hemiptera. These insects are well-known as pit scales due to the characteristic depressions they form on the bark of their host plants, where they reside and feed under a protective, semi-transparent waxy cover.

The primary hosts for this species are trees in the genus Quercus (oaks). They target young twigs and branches, where they insert their stylets into the plant tissues to extract sap. This feeding behavior makes them a significant pest in nurseries, botanical gardens, and urban landscaping environments.

The biology of Asterolecanium vittatum follows a typical scale insect pattern. After hatching from eggs, the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, move across the bark to find an optimal feeding site. Once settled, they secrete a wax test, molt, and remain stationary for the rest of their lives, focusing entirely on growth and reproduction.

The damage caused by this insect is primarily physiological and mechanical. By continuously withdrawing sap, the insects weaken the tree, leading to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and structural damage to the bark. Severe infestations can cause branch dieback and, in vulnerable young saplings, may lead to the total decline of the host plant.
