Description

Systematic position. The Styrian moth (Athetis lepigone) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Noctuidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses in various cropping systems throughout its range, primarily across Europe and temperate Asia.

Host plants. This species is a polyphagous pest with a diverse diet. It predominantly targets cereal crops, including winter wheat, barley, and rye. It can also infest broad-leaved crops such as sugar beets, sunflowers, and buckwheat, along with numerous wild weed species that act as alternative food sources.

Biology and life cycle. The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis. It overwinters as mature larvae in the soil at depths ranging from 5 to 10 centimeters. In the spring, the larvae pupate. Adult moths emerge at the beginning of summer. The females lay eggs primarily on the undersides of leaves, ensuring that the larvae have immediate access to food upon hatching.

Damage and harmfulness. Young larvae skeletonize the leaves, consuming the green tissue and leaving behind the veins. As they grow larger, they cause more severe defoliation, leading to the destruction of significant portions of the plant biomass. In high-density populations, the larvae can cause total crop failure, particularly in younger wheat fields.

Protection measures. Effective control involves a combination of agronomic and chemical methods. Cultural practices, such as deep autumn plowing to disrupt overwintering pupae and rigorous weed control, are essential for reducing initial infestation levels. During high-risk periods, the application of registered insecticides (including pyrethroids or organophosphates) is recommended based on established economic thresholds.
