Aulacophora atripennis is a destructive insect species belonging to the family Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. Recognized as a significant agricultural pest, this beetle is widely known for causing severe damage to cucurbit crops across various tropical and subtropical farming regions globally.

The primary hosts for this pest include members of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, squashes, and bitter gourds. The adult beetles are highly active, feeding on foliage, while the larvae dwell in the soil, posing a dual threat to both the root system and the above-ground parts of the plant.

The life cycle of the insect involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited by females in the soil near the base of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on roots, which disrupts water and nutrient uptake, often resulting in the wilting and stunted growth of young crops during their critical development stage.

Adult beetles are leaf-feeders that chew distinct, irregular holes in the leaf blades. This skeletonization process significantly reduces the leaf surface area available for photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor and diminished fruit yields. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage caused by larval root feeding and adult foliage consumption can lead to total crop failure.

Effective management strategies require a multifaceted approach to mitigate population levels:
