Cucurbit leaf beetle

Systematic position and classification. The cucurbit leaf beetle (Aulacophora femoralis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. As a specialized phytophagous insect, it has evolved to thrive on cucurbits, making it a significant pest in various agricultural regions, particularly within Asian markets where melon and cucumber production is intensive.

Host plants. This beetle has a narrow host range limited primarily to the Cucurbitaceae family. It poses a serious threat to cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, squashes, and bitter gourds. The pest's ability to survive on wild cucurbit species ensures that its population can persist in the environment even when main crops are not present in the field.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage, typically in soil or under debris. In spring, adults emerge to feed on foliage before mating. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the base of host plants. Upon hatching, larvae burrow into the root system to feed and develop until they reach the pupation stage.

Damage and economic impact. The beetle causes damage at both the adult and larval stages. Adults chew irregular holes in leaves, which hinders plant growth and reduces fruit quality. Larvae are arguably more damaging as they feed on roots and the root collar, causing stunted growth, wilting, and often plant death. This root damage also creates entry points for secondary soil-borne fungal pathogens.

Control measures. A successful integrated pest management (IPM) strategy is essential.

• Practice crop rotation to interrupt the pest cycle.
• Remove and destroy crop residues after harvest to reduce overwintering sites.
• Maintain weed-free fields to prevent alternative food sources.
• Use systemic insecticides targeting the root zone or foliage when damage exceeds thresholds.
• Implement early detection monitoring during the seedling stage.
