Description
Systematic position: The pumpkin beetle (Aulacophora hilaris) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. As a specialized phytophagous insect, it is a significant agricultural pest that primarily targets plants within the Cucurbitaceae family.
Host crops: This pest primarily affects cucurbits, including cucumbers, zucchini, squash, pumpkins, and melons. It can cause severe damage to commercial vegetable fields, as well as home gardens, by feeding on both cultivated varieties and wild cucurbit species.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Aulacophora hilaris consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females lay eggs in the soil around the base of the host plants. After hatching, the larvae immediately begin to feed on the root systems, subsequently pupating within the soil before emerging as adults to continue the cycle.
Damage and pest status: Adults cause direct damage by feeding on leaves, creating distinct round holes, and consuming flowers, which significantly reduces pollination and fruit set. The larvae are particularly destructive as they burrow into the roots, causing plant wilting, stunted growth, and eventual death, especially in younger, more vulnerable seedlings.
