Description

Aulacophora indica, commonly referred to as the cucurbit leaf beetle, is a significant insect pest belonging to the Chrysomelidae family and the Coleoptera order. It is widely recognized for causing substantial economic losses in vegetable farming, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia.

This pest primarily attacks plants within the Cucurbitaceae family, including cucumber, melon, pumpkin, and watermelon. Both adult beetles and their larvae pose a threat, attacking different parts of the plant and necessitating proactive monitoring throughout the growing season.

The biological cycle consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adult beetles are characterized by their feeding activity on leaves, while larvae develop in the soil, feeding on roots and the base of the stem. Under favorable temperature conditions, the species can produce multiple generations, leading to overlapping life cycles and continuous pressure on the crops.

Damage is characterized by irregular holes and skeletonization of leaves caused by adults. More severely, larvae cause root pruning and stem boring, which leads to plant wilting, stunted growth, and death. In cases of heavy infestation, seedling survival rates are drastically reduced, often forcing farmers to replant crops.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include regular monitoring of field edges, deep ploughing to expose pupae to predators, and the use of physical barriers like mesh nets on young plants. When chemical intervention is necessary, targeted application of systemic or contact insecticides is recommended to mitigate the impact of the pest while preserving beneficial insects.
