Description
The pumpkin leaf beetle (Aulacophora lewisii) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a significant agricultural pest primarily found in East and Southeast Asia, known for its destructive feeding habits on various horticultural and vegetable crops.
This beetle is an oligophagous feeder, specifically targeting plants in the Cucurbitaceae family. Common hosts include cucumbers, melons, watermelons, pumpkins, squashes, and bitter gourds. Both adult beetles and larvae cause damage, though they target different parts of the plant, significantly impacting overall plant health and vigor.
The life cycle of Aulacophora lewisii includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited in the soil near the host plant's base. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding on the subterranean roots and the lower stem tissues, while the adult beetles feed extensively on the foliage, flowers, and stems above ground.

The most critical damage, however, is caused by larvae destroying the root system, which disrupts nutrient uptake and makes the plant susceptible to secondary fungal infections and total wilting, leading to substantial yield losses.
