Pumpkin leaf beetle

Aulacophora olivieri is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is widely recognized as a serious threat to cucurbitaceous crops, causing both direct feeding damage and potential transmission of plant pathogens within agricultural ecosystems.

The beetle primarily attacks crops such as cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, melons, and watermelons. Adult beetles feed extensively on leaves, creating distinct holes and ragged edges, and often destroy flowers or small fruits. Larvae are subterranean, feeding on the roots and the base of the stems, which frequently causes young plants to wilt, collapse, and eventually die.

The life cycle of the beetle is deeply influenced by environmental conditions, particularly soil moisture and temperature. Adult females deposit eggs in the soil around the host plant. Once hatched, the larvae descend to the roots. The adults are strong fliers, which allows them to migrate between fields and quickly infest new plantings throughout the growing season.

Economic damage is observed when leaf tissue is consumed, reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis and overall vigor. Furthermore, the larval feeding on roots significantly stunts growth and creates entry points for secondary soil-borne infections. If left uncontrolled, these pests can drastically reduce yield quality and quantity, especially in warmer climates.
