Description
Systematic position: The copper leaf weevil (scientific name Auletes cupreus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Rhynchitidae (often referred to as leaf-rolling weevils). It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that targets fruit orchards in temperate climate zones.
Host plants: This pest primarily affects pome and stone fruit trees. Species such as apple, pear, plum, cherry, and apricot are highly susceptible. The pest is particularly devastating in orchards where integrated pest management practices are not strictly observed.
Biology and lifecycle: Adult weevils overwinter in the soil at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters. In early spring, as temperatures rise, they emerge to feed on developing buds. The females deposit eggs into the fruitlets or leaf petioles and then cut the stems, causing the plant parts to wither and fall to the ground, where the larvae complete their development.
Damage and economic impact: The primary economic damage occurs during the early spring when weevils bore into buds, preventing them from flowering. Later in the season, the destruction of fruitlets leads to significant crop thinning and premature fruit drop. Left unchecked, infestation levels can reduce fruit yields by more than half.
Control measures: Effective management includes cultural practices such as tilling the soil beneath the canopy to disturb and kill pupating larvae. Additionally, removing fallen fruit and leaves is essential to break the lifecycle. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides during the emergence period, specifically before bloom and immediately after petal fall.
