Aulonium

Aulonium is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Zopheridae. These insects are commonly found under the bark of trees, where they interact with the subcortical environment. They are often misidentified or grouped with traditional bark beetles, though their ecological role is specific to wood decay and association with other secondary pests.

These beetles primarily affect various conifers and deciduous trees, including pine, spruce, and oak. They gravitate towards trees that are already stressed by drought, fungal diseases, or infestations by primary borers like Scolytinae. Their presence is usually a sign of declining tree health.

The biology and life cycle of Aulonium are dictated by the quality of the host tree's bark and phloem. After mating, females lay eggs within crevices or existing galleries. The larval stage is spent entirely under the bark, where they feed and develop into pupae. The duration of the cycle depends heavily on temperature and moisture levels.

Damage is characterized by the widening and clearing of galleries under the bark, which can disrupt nutrient transport. While they are often considered secondary, their collective activity significantly exacerbates the decline of the host tree, contributing to the rapid necrosis of the bark tissues and overall structural failure.

Management and control strategies focus on maintaining forest sanitation. Key practices include the prompt removal of infested, weakened, or dead trees to prevent population spikes. Implementing sustainable forestry, encouraging natural predators, and minimizing mechanical damage to standing timber are essential components of an effective plant protection program.
