Aulonium trisulcum

Aulonium trisulcum

Description

Systematic position. Aulonium trisulcum is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Zopheridae (cylindrical bark beetles). These insects are specialized to live and reproduce within the subcortical environment of weakened or dying trees, exhibiting elongated body shapes that facilitate movement in tight spaces.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of this species is intrinsically linked to the health status of its host trees. Adults typically emerge and mate in spring or summer, seeking out trees already infested by primary bark beetles. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices, and larvae develop by consuming organic matter, fungal mycelia, and occasionally smaller insects residing within the tree's bark galleries.

Damage and severity. The primary impact of Aulonium trisulcum is linked to its role as an associate of bark beetles. By inhabiting the galleries created by primary pests, they enlarge these tunnels and introduce various decay organisms. This secondary activity significantly accelerates the decline of the host tree, making recovery impossible in severely infested specimens.

Host range. The pest is predominantly found in coniferous forests, particularly targeting pines and spruces. However, it can also inhabit broadleaved trees, especially those suffering from environmental stress, drought, or prior mechanical injury. Their presence often indicates an underlying ecological issue within the forest stand.

Control measures. Effective management of this pest focuses on silvicultural practices aimed at reducing breeding habitats. Essential strategies include:

  • proactive removal and disposal of infested or dying trees (sanitary logging);
  • minimizing the accumulation of logging residues where beetles can breed;
  • regular monitoring of tree stands for signs of primary bark beetle attacks;
  • utilizing biological control agents and chemical treatments in high-value timber areas to prevent population outbreaks.
