Description

Systematic position. Autoba is a genus of moths belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. These insects are primarily distributed in warmer climates, where they can emerge as significant agricultural pests capable of causing damage to various plant species.

Host plants. This pest species primarily targets plants within the legume and mallow families. In some regions, they are also documented feeding on various fruit-bearing shrubs and trees, adapting their diet based on the local availability of vegetation and environmental conditions.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on host plants, and the emerging larvae begin feeding immediately. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, involving multiple molts before pupation in the soil or protected areas of the host plant.

Damage and economic significance. Larval feeding patterns result in severe defoliation, as the caterpillars consume the entire leaf lamina, leaving only the primary veins. High population densities can lead to total crop failure, reduced fruit quality, and weakened plant vitality, which makes the crops more susceptible to secondary infections and environmental stress.

Protection measures. Effective management of Autoba requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

  • Continuous field monitoring using pheromone or light traps.
  • Field sanitation, including the removal of weeds and crop residues.
  • Application of biological pesticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis.
