Description
Mayfly (genus Baetis) belongs to the order Ephemeroptera, specifically the family Baetidae. While they are often observed near agricultural landscapes, their biological role is centered on freshwater ecosystems rather than terrestrial crops.
Strictly speaking, the genus Baetis does not constitute a pest of commercial crops. Their nymphs (naiads) are strictly aquatic, feeding on algae and detritus within streams and rivers, and therefore they do not consume or damage leaves, stems, or roots of cultivated plants.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, a nymph stage in water, and a short-lived adult stage (imago). The aquatic nymph stage can last for several months, making them sensitive indicators of water quality in areas adjacent to farming land.
In terms of damage and harm, Baetis are considered harmless to agriculture. Mass emergence events of adult mayflies are a natural phenomenon, and while they may temporarily accumulate around equipment lights, they do not impact the physiological health of plant cultures.
No specific plant protection measures are required for Baetis. Agronomic focus remains on maintaining water quality standards, as the presence of healthy mayfly populations often indicates a well-balanced local environment that supports overall biodiversity without negatively impacting harvest security.
