Description
The genus Procloeon belongs to the order Ephemeroptera and the family Baetidae. While most mayflies are considered indicators of water quality, certain conditions in commercial aquatic plant cultivation or hydroponics can turn them into potential pests that affect the health and yield of crops.
The taxonomic classification identifies these organisms as aquatic insects where the nymphal stage is spent entirely in water. Unlike terrestrial pests, their impact is focused on the submerged or floating parts of plants, primarily targeting the root systems and tender leaves of young seedlings.
The life cycle involves egg deposition in water, followed by multiple nymphal molts. Under stable conditions, the population can increase significantly. The nymphs feed by grazing on organic matter, but when density is high, they cause mechanical damage to plant tissues, compromising the nutrient uptake efficiency.
Economic damage is primarily seen in specialized nurseries. The physical wounding of stems and roots by nymphs creates entry points for secondary pathogens, such as root rot. This can lead to stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the death of the entire crop batch.
To control Procloeon effectively, management strategies should focus on environmental manipulation. Standard practices include the use of fine-mesh screening on water intake points, regular cleaning of tanks to remove organic buildup (nymph food source), and the use of UV sterilization for water circulation systems to eliminate eggs and early-instar larvae.
