Bandicoot rats (genus Bandicota) are large, robust rodents belonging to the Muridae family. These animals are significant pests in agricultural sectors across Southern and Southeastern Asia. Their size, combined with their highly adaptive burrowing behavior, makes them formidable adversaries for farmers who cultivate cereal crops and root vegetables.

These rodents primarily infest rice paddies, wheat fields, and sugarcane plantations. They have a destructive feeding habit that includes cutting stalks, consuming seeds, and digging up young plants. Unlike smaller mice, bandicoot rats can consume large quantities of crops daily, and their habit of hoarding food in subterranean chambers can lead to significant post-harvest losses.

The biology of the Bandicota species is marked by high reproductive rates and nocturnal activity. They are capable of excavating extensive tunnel systems that serve as both protection from predators and storage units for stolen grain. Their ability to swim well allows them to thrive in the flooded environments characteristic of rice cultivation, where they often tunnel through levees and irrigation dams.

A heavy infestation can significantly reduce yield quality and quantity, often resulting in widespread field patches that have been entirely cleared by the rodents' feeding and burrowing activities.
