Lesser bandicoot rat

The lesser bandicoot rat (Bandicota bengalensis) is a significant rodent pest belonging to the Muridae family. It is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia, where it thrives in agricultural environments, causing substantial losses to farmers every year.

This species is a generalist feeder that impacts various crops. It is particularly notorious for devastating rice paddies, wheat, and maize fields. Beyond grain crops, it also attacks root vegetables, legumes, and sugar cane, often consuming both young seedlings and mature produce, which leads to total crop failure in heavily infested areas.

The biology of Bandicota bengalensis is characterized by high reproductive rates and impressive burrowing capabilities. They construct deep, complex burrow systems consisting of multiple tunnels and storage chambers. A single pair can hoard significant amounts of grain within their nests, effectively stripping fields of harvestable yields before the farmers can reach them.

Damage caused by this rodent is severe. They are known for cutting stems at the base of the plant and consuming grains during the dough stage. The damage is not limited to consumption; their burrowing activities disturb soil structures and irrigation channels, leading to secondary damage in rice production fields. Their presence in storage facilities also poses a risk of massive post-harvest spoilage.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. The strategy should include cultural practices, such as maintaining weed-free field perimeters and ensuring timely harvesting. Chemical control, involving the application of anticoagulant rodenticides placed deep within active burrows, remains a critical component. Furthermore, physical barriers and community-based rodent control programs are essential for reducing the population density in large agricultural landscapes.
