Raspberry flea beetle

Systematic position: The Raspberry flea beetle (Batophila aerata) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This small beetle is a well-known pest in horticultural practices, particularly affecting berries in temperate climate zones.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest are Rubus species, specifically raspberries and blackberries. The beetle is capable of causing damage in both small garden plots and large commercial plantations, preferring young foliage during the active growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The insect typically completes one generation per year. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter. In the spring, they emerge to feed on developing leaves. After mating, females lay eggs on the plants, and the emerging larvae feed on the leaf tissue before descending to the soil for pupation.

Damage and economic significance: The main damage is characterized by small, round perforations in the leaves. Known as "shot-hole" damage, this feeding pattern significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants. Severe infestations lead to stunted growth, reduced berry size, and lower total yields, especially when plants are already stressed by environmental factors.

Control measures: Management strategies combine cultural practices and chemical intervention. Cultivating the soil under the bushes in autumn and early spring helps disrupt the pupal stage. When economic thresholds are exceeded, targeted applications of insecticides during the early growth stages are recommended to prevent excessive leaf loss.
