Description
Batrachedra amydraula, commonly known as the Lesser date moth, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Batrachedridae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) globally, particularly in major date-producing regions across the Middle East and Africa.
The primary host for this pest is the date palm tree. While the moth is small in size, its larvae are capable of causing devastating economic losses. They specifically target the fruit bunches, feeding on developing dates from the early post-pollination stage until maturation.
The biological life cycle of the moth consists of distinct stages including egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moths are nocturnal and deposit their eggs on the surface of young fruits or floral strands. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the soft tissues of the dates, creating tunnels that lead to internal damage and secondary infections.
Infestation symptoms are easily identifiable by the presence of silk webbing around the fruit strands and the premature shedding of immature dates. Larval feeding destroys the edible portion of the fruit, rendering the harvest unmarketable and significantly reducing the overall yield quality for producers.
