Description

Bedellia is a genus of small moths belonging to the family Bedelliidae within the order Lepidoptera. These insects are best known for their leaf-mining larvae, which feed exclusively on specific host plants, primarily within the family Convolvulaceae, causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage to crops.

The primary hosts of Bedellia species, particularly Bedellia somnulentella, include sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) and various types of morning glory. These plants are susceptible to infestation throughout the growing season, which can lead to reduced yield and poor crop development if the population density is high.

The biological cycle of this pest involves egg-laying on the leaves, followed by the hatching of larvae that immediately tunnel into the mesophyll of the host plant. Unlike other leaf miners that remain inside the leaf throughout development, Bedellia larvae frequently exit their mines and move to different parts of the leaf or even to different leaves to continue feeding.

Damage is characterized by extensive mining, which appears as pale, serpentine channels on the foliage. As the larvae mature, these mines expand and often coalesce, leading to necrotic spots, leaf yellowing, and premature senescence of the foliage. This reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize, directly impacting the storage root development in commercial crops like sweet potatoes.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

  • Early detection via pheromone traps and field scouting.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal of infested leaves and crop debris.
  • Control of wild Convolvulaceae weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
  • Application of targeted insecticides or biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps, when necessary.
