Description

The sweet potato leaf miner (Bedellia somnulentella) is a small moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Bedelliidae. This pest is widely recognized for its larval stage, during which it mines the leaves of various plants within the Convolvulaceae family.

The primary host for this species is the field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis). However, it is also known to infest sweet potatoes and various ornamental bindweeds, making it a significant concern for both garden maintenance and agricultural production in specific climates.

The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female deposits eggs on the leaf surface. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the leaf mesophyll, creating winding, translucent mines. As they mature, the larvae often exit the mines to feed externally on the leaf tissue.

The damage caused by the larvae manifests as irregular, light-colored, serpentine trails on the leaf surface. As the infestation progresses, these mines can coalesce, causing the foliage to wither, brown, and drop prematurely. This heavy defoliation stresses the plant, reducing its ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently.

Effective management strategies primarily focus on sanitation and cultural practices. Removing host weeds like bindweed from the surrounding area is crucial to break the pest's cycle.
