Bembidion properans

Systematic position: Bembidion properans is a species of ground beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Carabidae. While generally known as predatory beetles, they can sometimes cause significant agricultural damage during the seedling stage of various field crops.

Biology and life cycle: The species typically undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in early spring. Females lay eggs in moist soil, and larvae develop through several stages before pupating, eventually emerging as new adults to continue the cycle.

Nature of damage: The damage is primarily caused by adult beetles feeding on the tender tissues of germinating seeds and young seedlings. By gnawing on cotyledons and stems, they can weaken the plants significantly, leading to uneven stands, stunted growth, or even complete loss of seedlings in heavily infested areas.

Target crops: The pest poses a threat to various crops, including cereals, sugar beet, and oilseed rape. The most vulnerable period is during the early seedling stage, particularly when the weather conditions are unfavorable, preventing the plant from growing quickly past the stage of extreme susceptibility.
