Description
Systematic position. The Greek looper (Biston graecarius) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. This species is recognized for its specific development patterns associated with temperate and southern climates, making it a notable pest in orchards and woodland areas where its host plants are present.
Host plants. Biston graecarius is known to infest a variety of woody plants, particularly those belonging to the Rosaceae family. Primary economic crops at risk include apples, pears, cherries, and plums. The pest can transition from wild shrubs and neglected trees to commercial orchards, causing significant stress to cultivated plants due to defoliation.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. The insect typically overwinters in the pupal stage, buried in the soil near the base of host trees. Adult emergence coincides with early spring temperatures. Following mating, females lay eggs in clusters on branches or within bark crevices, which hatch into larvae that feed ravenously on expanding buds and foliage.

Young caterpillars begin by skeletonizing leaves, while older larvae consume the entire leaf lamina, leaving only veins.
