Oriental cockroach
Blatta
Description
The Oriental cockroach (lat. Blatta orientalis) is an insect of the order Blattodea, belonging to the Blattidae family. Although this species is typically classified as a synanthropic pest, it can cause significant damage to agricultural crops in closed-ground environments, greenhouses, and storage facilities by attacking both vegetative parts and seeds.
The pest favors areas with high humidity and abundant organic waste. In the agricultural sector, it is often found in greenhouses, mushroom production units, and vegetable storage facilities. Cockroaches are omnivorous: they damage seedlings, young shoots of ornamental and vegetable crops, and actively feed on seeds and fruits during the ripening stage, contaminating them with their excrement.
The biology of the species is characterized by incomplete metamorphosis. The female lays eggs in a special capsule called an ootheca, which she carries for some time before depositing it in a secluded, damp place. The nymphs resemble the adults but are smaller and wingless. Development from egg to sexually mature individual takes anywhere from a few months to a year, depending on favorable temperatures.
Damage symptoms include uneven leaf edges, eaten growing points, and hollow cavities in fruits. The harmfulness lies not only in the direct destruction of plant tissues but also in the transmission of pathogenic fungi and bacteria on their legs. Mass reproduction of the pest can lead to the loss of product marketability and reduced germination rates of planting material.
Protection measures involve a complex of agrotechnical and sanitary practices. It is crucial to maintain cleanliness in greenhouses, remove plant debris promptly, and limit moisture access to non-production areas. Effective control methods include the use of insecticide baits, traps, and the treatment of premises with contact pesticides during periods when no crops are present to effectively eliminate the infestation.
