This species is known to cause damage to various host plants, including tropical ornamentals, young citrus saplings, and greenhouse vegetables. The insects feed on tender leaves, shoots, and fruit, often causing irregular holes or completely consuming growing tips, which significantly stunts plant growth and mars the aesthetic quality of ornamental crops.

When threatened, these insects release a pungent defensive chemical secretion that can contaminate agricultural produce, leading to off-flavors and odors that render crops unmarketable. Furthermore, they may act as vectors for various microorganisms in highly humid agricultural environments.

Control strategies for the Florida cockroach should prioritize integrated pest management (IPM). Key actions include the sanitation of greenhouse floors to remove decaying organic matter, exclusion through the sealing of gaps, and the use of physical barriers. Chemical control, involving baits or targeted insecticide applications, should be used as a last resort, ensuring that applications do not negatively impact the quality of the harvested crops.
