Description
The rose leaf-rolling sawfly (Blennocampa pusilla) is an insect belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is a specialized pest that specifically targets rose plants, causing significant cosmetic and physiological damage to garden varieties and wild species.
The damage is highly characteristic: the larvae feed on the leaf tissue, which induces the leaf margins to curl tightly inwards, creating a tubular or 'warty' appearance. Inside these rolls, the larvae are protected from environmental factors and, partially, from contact insecticides, making early identification critical.
The life cycle of the sawfly begins with the overwintering of pre-pupae in cocoons within the soil at the base of the host plant. In the spring, adult sawflies emerge, mate, and lay eggs into the leaves using a serrated ovipositor. The larvae hatch shortly after, begin feeding immediately, and develop throughout the late spring and early summer.
The primary harm is caused by the larvae consuming the leaf parenchyma. Severely infested plants display widespread leaf curling, yellowing, and necrosis. As the leaves wither and drop prematurely, the overall vigor of the rose bush is reduced, which can negatively impact the plant's bloom cycle and ability to survive the winter.
