Small rose sawfly
Blennocampa pygmaea
Description
The small rose sawfly (Blennocampa pygmaea) is a member of the Tenthredinidae family within the order Hymenoptera. It is a specialist pest that primarily targets plants of the Rosa genus. It is frequently encountered in home gardens and commercial rose plantations, where it can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage if left unmanaged.
The biology of this species is synchronized with the vegetative season of its host plants. Adult sawflies emerge in the spring. Females utilize their ovipositors to insert eggs directly into the leaf tissue. This strategic placement provides the emerging larvae with immediate access to their primary food source, ensuring rapid development during the early summer months.
The life cycle encompasses four main stages: egg, larva (often called a false caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most destructive period. As the larvae grow, they consume the leaf epidermis and mesophyll, often leaving only the tough leaf veins intact. Once mature, the larvae drop to the soil to form cocoons and overwinter.
Damage caused by this insect is primarily characterized by skeletonized leaves. As the infestation progresses, the foliage becomes riddled with holes or completely consumed, leading to severe chlorosis and premature leaf drop. This reduces the plant's overall vigor, inhibits nutrient storage for the winter, and significantly degrades the appearance of the rose bushes.
Effective control strategies require a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. Gardeners should manually remove and destroy infested leaves during the early stages of the attack. Autumn cultivation of the soil around the base of the bushes is crucial for disrupting the pupal stage. When biological control is insufficient, application of registered insecticides during the early larval stage provides the best results.
