Harold's Geometer Moth

Boarmia haroldaria is a species of moth within the family Geometridae, belonging to the order Lepidoptera. As a defoliating pest, it draws attention from foresters and arborists concerned with the health of woodlots and ornamental tree populations, as its larvae are known to feed on specific vegetation, impacting overall plant vigor.

The primary host plants include a variety of coniferous and deciduous tree species. The larvae are the main destructive stage, consuming leaf tissue or needles. When population densities reach high levels, this feeding activity can cause significant defoliation, which stresses the host plant and reduces its capacity for annual growth and physiological resilience.

The life cycle of this species typically follows a metamorphosis consisting of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Hibernation usually takes place during the pupal stage, buried in forest litter or sheltered within bark crevices. Once spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs, initiating the next generation's feeding cycle on the host plant foliage.

The damage is primarily characterized by skeletonization or complete loss of foliage. This loss of photosynthetic surface area is particularly damaging during peak growing seasons. Continuous defoliation over several years can lead to the mortality of susceptible trees, especially those already weakened by environmental factors or other pests.

Management strategies for this pest focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key efforts include monitoring adult flight activity using pheromone traps to time interventions correctly. Biological control agents, such as specific parasitic wasps or bacterial pathogens like Bacillus thuringiensis, are often preferred to minimize environmental impact while effectively suppressing larval populations.
