Boarmia japygiaria belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. Commonly known as part of the looper moths, these insects are known for the unique inchworm movement of their larvae. While not always classified as a major agricultural pest, they can cause localized outbreaks that impact the health and vigor of various host plants.

This species primarily feeds on the foliage of diverse woody plants and shrubs. The caterpillars are voracious leaf-eaters, consuming leaf tissue and leaving behind veins, which significantly hampers the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis. Pupation usually occurs in protected soil crevices or beneath bark, which provides effective shelter against environmental stressors during the winter months.

The primary damage symptoms include irregular notches along the leaf margins, progressing to total defoliation in high-density populations. The harmful impact of this pest extends to the overall weakening of the host plant, making it more susceptible to secondary pathogenic attacks, such as fungal infections or wood-boring insects, which can permanently damage the plant's vascular system.
