Description

The Gray moth (scientific name Boarmia pampinaria, sometimes referred to as Anavitrinella pampinaria) is a member of the family Geometridae, order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant pest in various horticultural environments, primarily noted for its impact on fruit-bearing trees.

This insect affects a wide variety of plant hosts. Common targets include apple, pear, peach, and plum trees, as well as citrus varieties. Because the larvae are generalist feeders, they can also subsist on various ornamental and wild trees, which often serves as a reservoir for infestations into managed orchards.

The life cycle of the moth consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The pupal stage typically overwinters in the soil beneath the host plants. Once weather conditions improve in the spring, adults emerge to mate and lay eggs, leading to multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

High populations can lead to significant defoliation, which severely hampers the tree's ability to store carbohydrates, resulting in reduced fruit size and lower yield.
