Description
The Engrailed moth (Boarmia ribeata, also known as Alcis ribeata) is a species of moth belonging to the family Geometridae. As a significant defoliator, it poses a recurring challenge to forest health and nursery management, specifically concerning conifer species in Europe and parts of Asia.
Host plants primarily include spruce (Picea) and fir (Abies) species. The larvae are specialized feeders that inhabit the canopy, showing a distinct preference for young needles, although they will consume older growth under conditions of high population density.
The biological cycle follows a typical univoltine pattern, meaning one generation occurs per year. The larvae overwinter in a quiescent state, often attached to branches, and resume feeding as temperatures rise in early spring. Pupation takes place in the soil or leaf litter beneath the host tree, followed by the emergence of adults in mid-summer.
The damage caused by Boarmia ribeata is characterized by severe defoliation, which hampers the tree's photosynthetic capability. Repeated defoliation events significantly reduce timber quality, weaken the tree's immune response to pathogens, and can lead to secondary infestations by bark beetles, ultimately threatening forest stand stability.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) protocols. These include monitoring larval density through branch sampling, the use of light traps for adult moth population assessment, and the application of selective insecticides or biological control agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis when economic thresholds are exceeded.
