Systematic position: Boettgerilla (Boettgerilla pallens) is a genus of air-breathing land slugs, belonging to the family Boettgerillidae within the Gastropoda class. Unlike many other slugs, this species is noted for its extremely slender, worm-like body and its strong preference for a subterranean lifestyle.

Biology and lifecycle: This slug is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, meaning it possesses both male and female reproductive organs. It thrives in humid environments and can be found deep in the soil profile, often occupying worm tunnels or rodent burrows. Its lifecycle is heavily dependent on soil moisture levels, allowing it to survive in depths that protect it from surface predators and weather changes.

Damage and pest status: As a significant agricultural pest, Boettgerilla feeds almost exclusively underground. It tunnels into tubers, bulbs, and primary roots, causing internal damage that is often invisible until harvest. These holes facilitate secondary bacterial and fungal infections, which lead to rapid decay of crops in storage.

Affected crops: The slug is a generalist feeder that impacts a variety of horticultural and agricultural crops. Its primary targets include potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions, and various ornamental bulbs. In greenhouse conditions, it can also cause severe damage to the root systems of young seedlings, leading to crop failure.
