Earth slug

The earth slug (Boettgerilla pallens) is a member of the Boettgerillidae family. It is a distinctive, slender mollusc often reaching lengths of up to 60 mm. The body is typically pale, greyish or yellowish in color, and it is easily recognized by a prominent keel that runs along its back towards the mantle. This species is highly adapted for a subterranean lifestyle.

This pest is a significant threat to various agricultural and horticultural crops. It is known to feed on potatoes, carrots, beetroot, and a wide array of leafy greens. Unlike surface-feeding slugs, Boettgerilla pallens often burrows deep into the soil to consume tubers and roots, making it a particularly destructive pest that is difficult to detect before harvest time.

The life cycle of the earth slug is highly dependent on environmental moisture and temperature. Being hermaphroditic, they deposit eggs in clusters within moist soil crevices or under decaying organic matter. The life stages progress from eggs to juveniles and eventually to sexually mature adults. Under favorable conditions, the population can expand rapidly, especially in gardens with high organic content.

The damage caused by these slugs is primarily manifested as deep holes and galleries in root vegetables and tubers. These wounds serve as entry points for pathogens, significantly increasing the risk of secondary infections, such as bacterial soft rot. In severe infestations, seedlings can be completely decimated, leading to significant yield losses for commercial and home growers alike.
