Description
The rice swift (Borbo cinnara) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Hesperiidae. It is a common insect pest recognized for its rapid flight patterns and its significant impact on rice production in various parts of Asia and the Pacific regions.
The primary host plant for this species is rice (Oryza sativa). However, it is also known to infest various wild grasses, including species within the genera Panicum and Paspalum, which allows the population to survive even when commercial rice crops are not available.
The life cycle proceeds through four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female deposits eggs individually on the underside of rice leaves. The larvae, once hatched, typically construct protective shelters by rolling or folding leaves and securing them with silk, where they feed throughout their developmental stages.
The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by the consumption of leaf tissue, often leading to ragged edges or completely stripped leaves. High larval density can cause severe defoliation, which impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity and ultimately results in lower grain yield and quality.
