Auger beetle
Bostrichus
Description
Auger beetles, belonging to the family Bostrichidae, are a group of coleopteran insects that are recognized as serious technical pests of wood. Adult beetles have a distinct body shape with a head bent downwards, hidden under a hood-like pronotum, which gives them their characteristic appearance. These beetles typically infest dry wood, attacking weakened living trees as well as lumber and timber products.
Systematically, this genus belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Bostrichidae. While biology can vary slightly between species, their common trait is a cryptic lifestyle. Adult beetles and their larvae spend most of their life cycle inside plant tissues or wood products, making them extremely difficult to detect in the early stages of infestation.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs in cracks or pre-existing holes in the wood. Upon hatching, larvae bore deep tunnels into the material, effectively reducing it to wood dust. Pupation occurs within these galleries, and upon emerging, the new generation of adults leaves behind distinct circular exit holes in the surface of the wood.
The primary damage is caused by the deep structural degradation of the wood. Larvae consume wood fibers, leading to a loss of mechanical strength in structures, damage to furniture, and economic losses in timber yards. In orchards, they can attack the branches of fruit trees, causing dieback and leaving the tree highly susceptible to secondary attacks by other pests or pathogens.
Control strategies involve both preventive and curative measures. The most important practice is proper sanitation of orchards, including the removal and destruction of dead wood and infested branches. For structural protection, deep impregnation of wood with insecticides and wood preservatives is highly recommended. In storage facilities, fumigation is used, and maintaining low moisture levels helps prevent successful larval development.
