Jesuit borer
Bostrychopsis jesuita
Description
Systematic position. The Jesuit borer (Bostrychopsis jesuita) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Bostrichidae family. These insects are commonly known as auger beetles or wood borers. They are primarily known for their destructive impact on trees and timber, often causing significant economic losses in plantations and orchards.
Host plants. The pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plant species. Its primary hosts include various fruit trees like apple, pear, and citrus, as well as several native Australian trees such as Eucalyptus and Acacia species. The borer can also attack stressed or declining trees, further compromising their health.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the Jesuit borer is intrinsically linked to the wood of the host tree. Adult beetles bore holes into the branches or trunks to lay eggs. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the xylem, creating elaborate galleries. The larval stage is long-lasting, as the insect spends most of its life cycle feeding on the woody tissue before pupating and emerging as an adult.
Damage and severity. The damage caused by Bostrychopsis jesuita is characterized by circular exit holes and the accumulation of frass (fine wood dust) near the entry points. As larvae tunnel through the wood, they disrupt the plant's vascular system, leading to branch dieback, crown thinning, and eventual tree death if the infestation is heavy or if the tree is already suffering from drought or disease.
Control measures. Managing the Jesuit borer is challenging due to the hidden lifestyle of the larvae. Recommended strategies include:
- Prompt removal and destruction of infested wood to prevent the spread of the population.
- Maintaining vigorous tree growth through proper irrigation and fertilization.
- Applying systemic insecticides as preventive measures in areas with high pest activity.
- Monitoring for adult emergence using traps and regular visual inspections of the bark.
