Description
Botrylloides is a genus of colonial ascidians belonging to the family Styelidae. While these organisms are integral parts of natural marine ecosystems, in the field of aquaculture, they are categorized as major biofouling pests that severely impact the productivity of shellfish farming operations worldwide.
These organisms specifically target farmed bivalves such as oysters, mussels, and scallops. By settling on the shells of these mollusks, Botrylloides colonies form dense, mat-like structures that hinder the animals' ability to open their shells, feed, and filter water properly, leading to significant economic losses in the aquaculture industry.
The biology of Botrylloides is characterized by a biphasic life cycle: a short-lived, free-swimming larval stage followed by a sessile colonial phase. The larvae actively seek suitable substrates for attachment, after which they undergo metamorphosis and begin asexual reproduction through budding, allowing the colony to expand rapidly in size and density within a short period.
