Violet tunicate

The Violet tunicate (Botrylloides violaceus) is a colonial ascidian species belonging to the order Stolidobranchia and the family Styelidae. In aquaculture, this organism is widely recognized as a major fouling pest, capable of disrupting commercial shellfish production by colonizing culture structures and inhibiting the growth of target species.

Its biological cycle is characterized by a rapid colonization phase. Being a hermaphroditic organism, it reproduces effectively in various environmental conditions. Larvae are motile and show strong preference for artificial substrates, which allows them to quickly cover mussel socks, longlines, and other aquaculture infrastructure within a very short period.

The damage caused by this tunicate is primarily due to competition for space and resources. By forming dense, crust-like colonies over bivalves, it prevents them from filtering water efficiently. This leads to reduced feeding rates, poor growth performance, and increased mortality among cultured mussels and oysters, significantly impacting the productivity of the farm.

The pest's high invasive potential is attributed to its resilience and ability to thrive in a broad spectrum of water temperatures and salinities. Furthermore, colonial fragments can regenerate if broken off during improper cleaning, often leading to re-infestation of cleaned areas. Its primary method of spread between different farm locations is through human-aided transport on boat hulls and gear.
