Description

Biting lice (genus Bovicola) are small, wingless ectoparasites belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Trichodectidae. Unlike blood-sucking lice, these parasites primarily feed on epidermal scales, skin debris, and sebaceous gland secretions. They spend their entire life cycle on the host, making them host-specific pests for various mammals.

These lice are major pests in livestock production, primarily affecting cattle (Bovicola bovis), sheep (Bovicola ovis), and goats. They are rarely found away from their host, as they have a low tolerance for environmental conditions and die quickly if detached from the animal's skin and coat, where they thrive in specific temperature and humidity ranges.

The life cycle consists of three developmental stages: egg (nit), nymph, and adult. The female glues her eggs firmly to the base of the hair shafts. The incubation period and development into adulthood generally take about three to four weeks. Under optimal conditions of poor herd hygiene or seasonal stress, the population can reach very high numbers rapidly.

The damage caused by Bovicola is primarily due to intense irritation and itching caused by their feeding activity. Infested animals often experience severe restlessness, excessive rubbing, and biting at their skin, leading to hair loss (alopecia), skin inflammation, and open sores. This results in reduced weight gain, decreased milk yield, and significant damage to hides and wool quality.

Effective management strategies rely on early detection through physical examination of the hair coat. Control measures include the application of registered insecticides such as pour-on formulations, sprays, or dusts. Successful eradication requires simultaneous treatment of all animals in the herd and, in some cases, cleaning and disinfecting the animal housing facilities to prevent re-infestation.
