Goat biting louse

The goat biting louse (Bovicola crassipes) is a parasitic insect belonging to the order Phthiraptera and the family Trichodectidae. Unlike sucking lice, this species is a chewing louse that possesses a robust mandible, allowing it to feed on skin debris, dander, and secretions from the host's sebaceous glands. It spends its entire life cycle on the host's body.

This parasite is host-specific to goats. It primarily infests areas with high hair density, where the environment is stable and protected. Infestations are most common during winter and early spring, when goats are housed in closer quarters and the lack of sunlight creates a favorable microclimate for the louse population to expand rapidly.

The biological cycle of Bovicola crassipes follows a hemimetabolous development process. Adult females glue their eggs (nits) firmly to the base of the hair shafts. After hatching, the nymphs go through several instars before reaching adulthood, with the entire life cycle spanning approximately 3 to 4 weeks under ideal conditions. The louse is highly dependent on the host's body heat for survival.

The primary economic and health impact is caused by intense pruritus (itching). Affected goats exhibit nervous behavior, frequently scratching, rubbing against objects, and biting at their own skin. This behavior causes hair loss (alopecia), skin inflammation, and potentially severe secondary bacterial infections. The stress from persistent itching leads to decreased weight gain and overall loss of animal productivity.

Control strategies involve the application of registered insecticides, such as pyrethroids or macrocyclic lactones, which can be administered via sprays, pour-on treatments, or dips. Good management practices, including maintaining proper stocking density and ensuring hygienic living conditions, are essential to minimize the risk of infestation. It is crucial to treat all animals in the flock simultaneously to break the transmission cycle.
