Description
The almond aphid (Brachycaudus amygdalinus) is a member of the family Aphididae, order Hemiptera. It is a highly specialized pest primarily affecting almond trees and related stone fruit species. This insect is widely distributed in regions where almond cultivation is prominent, causing significant economic damage if not properly managed.
The primary hosts for this species are trees belonging to the genus Prunus, specifically the common almond (Prunus dulcis). Both young nursery trees and mature orchard trees are susceptible, with infestations often being most severe during the early stages of the growing season when new tissue is abundant.
The life cycle of the almond aphid is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. The species overwinters as eggs on the bark of twigs. As spring arrives, nymphs emerge and rapidly establish colonies on the underside of leaves. Throughout the summer, the population grows exponentially through multiple parthenogenic generations.
Damage is characterized by the curling, twisting, and yellowing of foliage caused by the extraction of phloem sap. Beyond direct mechanical injury, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaf surface, significantly reducing photosynthesis and vigor in the host tree.
Effective management strategies rely on an integrated approach to pest control. Growers should focus on early monitoring of apical shoots during spring. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is often necessary when threshold levels are exceeded. Additionally, promoting biological control agents such as lady beetles (Coccinellidae) and lacewings is crucial for maintaining sustainable population levels within the orchard ecosystem.
