Systematic position: Brachydesmus belongs to the class Diplopoda (millipedes), order Polydesmida, and family Polydesmidae. These small arthropods live primarily in the upper layers of soil rich in organic matter, where they thrive in dark, humid environments.
Crops affected: This pest poses a significant threat to a wide range of agricultural crops, particularly in greenhouse and nursery environments. It most frequently damages young seedlings, vegetable transplants, germinating seeds, as well as the roots and tubers of various root crops.
Biology and life cycle: Brachydesmus leads a cryptic, soil-dwelling lifestyle. Reproduction occurs within the soil, where females lay batches of eggs in protected spots.
