Polydesmus

Description

Polydesmus is a genus of millipedes belonging to the order Polydesmida. Known commonly as flat-backed millipedes, these organisms are typically found in moist environments, such as leaf litter, decaying organic matter, and damp soil. While they play a role in decomposition, they can become significant pests in horticultural settings when populations are high or preferred food sources are scarce.

These millipedes primarily target young seedlings, soft roots, and underground stems of various vegetables, including cucumbers, tomatoes, and cabbage. They are also notorious for damaging root crops like carrots and potatoes, as well as strawberries, where they feed on ripening fruits in contact with the moist soil surface, causing deep pits that lead to rotting.

The biology of Polydesmus is characterized by a preference for high humidity and darkness. They deposit eggs in soil chambers, and the larvae undergo multiple molts, increasing in segment numbers with each stage. Their activity is largely nocturnal, as they avoid direct sunlight and dry conditions, staying burrowed deep in the soil during the heat of the day.

Damage caused by Polydesmus is often underestimated. By feeding on seeds and tender roots, they significantly reduce plant vigor, leading to stunted growth or total plant failure. Furthermore, the lesions created by their feeding activity serve as entry points for various soil-borne pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, which can exacerbate the overall impact on crop yields.

Management strategies for controlling millipede infestations include:

  • Maintaining good garden sanitation by removing piles of debris and decaying organic material.
  • Implementing proper soil drainage to avoid waterlogged conditions that favor these pests.
  • Tilling the soil regularly to disturb their habitats and expose them to natural predators or desiccation.
  • Using bait traps made of potato or carrot slices buried shallowly to monitor and reduce populations.
  • Applying targeted soil insecticides only when necessary and in accordance with local agricultural guidelines.
