Description

Systematic position. The flax pollen beetle (Brachypterolus pulicarius) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Nitidulidae. It is a specialized insect pest that primarily affects flax crops, causing economic losses in both fiber and oilseed flax production systems.

Affected crops and damage. The beetle is an oligophagous species that feeds on members of the Linaceae family. Both adults and larvae contribute to crop damage. Adults feed on flower buds, causing them to wither and fall off, while larvae bore into the flax bolls to feed on developing seeds, significantly reducing seed yield and overall grain quality.

Biology and life cycle. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under plant debris in or near flax fields. They emerge in the spring as temperatures rise, moving to weed hosts before migrating to flax crops. Females deposit eggs into the flower buds. Upon hatching, larvae feed internally until they complete their development, after which they drop to the soil to pupate.

Economic importance. The most significant damage occurs during the budding and flowering stages of flax. High beetle populations can cause substantial loss of generative organs, leading to reduced seed set and quality. In severe infestations, the yield loss can be considerable, impacting the economic feasibility of the flax cultivation.
