Flax pollen beetle

Brachypterolus vestitus (taxonomic position: order Coleoptera, family Nitidulidae) is a specialized insect pest that primarily affects flax cultivation. Known commonly as a type of pollen beetle, it is a significant threat to commercial flax production, as it specifically targets the reproductive parts of the plant during the critical stages of flower and seed development.

The primary host for this beetle is flax (Linum usitatissimum). The pest is particularly attracted to flax fields during the budding and flowering phenophases. In high-density populations, the damage can be devastating, significantly reducing both seed yield and the overall quality of the harvested crop, which is crucial for oil and fiber producers.

The life cycle of the pest is synchronized with the development of the flax crop. Adults overwinter in the soil or under crop debris. Upon emergence in the spring, they migrate to flax fields, where they feed on pollen and floral tissues. Mating occurs shortly thereafter, and females insert eggs directly into the buds, providing the emerging larvae with immediate access to food.

The damage is caused primarily by the larvae, which consume the internal contents of the buds, ovaries, and developing seeds. This feeding activity often causes the buds to abort or results in the formation of empty or poorly developed seed pods. The impact is seen as reduced pollination success and significant loss of seeds, directly affecting profitability.

Effective management strategies rely on an integrated approach. Cultural practices include proper crop rotation, destruction of alternative host weeds, and deep tillage after harvest to disrupt the beetle's pupation sites. Chemical control is effective if applied during the early adult migration phase, before the females begin oviposition inside the flower buds, ensuring minimal damage to the reproductive structures.
