Fungus gnat

Bradysia impatiens

Description

The fungus gnat (Bradysia impatiens) belongs to the Sciaridae family within the order Diptera. These small flies are a common pest in indoor environments, greenhouses, and nurseries where high soil moisture and decaying organic matter are present. While adult flies are primarily a nuisance, their larvae stage causes significant agricultural and horticultural damage.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including vegetable seedlings, potted flowers, and mushrooms. Greenhouse vegetables, such as cucumbers and peppers, are particularly susceptible during the early propagation stages. The larvae thrive in moist potting media and can destroy young root systems rapidly.

The lifecycle of Bradysia impatiens consists of egg, four larval instars, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs directly into the moist substrate. Under warm, humid conditions, a generation can be completed in just a few weeks. Larvae feed primarily on fungi, but when populations are high, they transition to feeding on healthy root hairs and vascular tissue.

Damage is characterized by stunted plant growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the collapse of seedlings. The feeding tunnels created by larvae in stems or roots provide entry points for soil-borne pathogens like Pythium and Phytophthora, which often leads to complex plant diseases and increased mortality rates in greenhouse crops.

Effective management requires an integrated approach:

  • Moisture management: Allow the top layers of the soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Monitoring: Utilize yellow sticky traps to detect adult activity and reduce breeding populations.
  • Biological control: Introduce beneficial nematodes like Steinernema feltiae to target larvae in the soil.
  • Sanitation: Remove decaying plant debris and keep the greenhouse area clean to limit food sources.
  • Chemical control: Apply appropriate insecticides as a last resort, ensuring they are compatible with other biological control agents used in the facility.
