Bradysia yangi

Systematic position. Bradysia yangi belongs to the order Diptera, family Sciaridae, commonly known as fungus gnats. These small flies are a persistent problem in horticulture, where the larvae thrive in moist, organic-rich environments such as potting media and greenhouse soils.

Host plants. This pest primarily affects greenhouse-grown crops, vegetable seedlings, and ornamental plants in containers. Because they inhabit the soil, they often go unnoticed until the plants begin to show signs of stunted growth or wilting, particularly during the critical early stages of development.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Bradysia yangi consists of four distinct stages: egg, four larval instars, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in the damp substrate. Under optimal greenhouse conditions, the entire development cycle can be completed in approximately three weeks, allowing for rapid population explosions if environmental conditions remain favorable.

Damage and severity. The larvae are the stage responsible for plant damage. They feed on roots, root hairs, and organic matter within the soil. Heavy infestation results in the destruction of the root system, which prevents proper water and nutrient uptake. Furthermore, the lesions caused by larval feeding serve as entry points for root rot pathogens, leading to sudden plant collapse.

Integrated pest management strategies:

• Manage soil moisture levels by avoiding prolonged over-saturation of the substrate.
• Use yellow sticky traps to capture adult flies and monitor population levels.
• Apply biological controls such as entomopathogenic nematodes (e.g., Steinernema feltiae).
• Utilize soil drenches with insecticides as a last resort in severe infestations.
• Ensure strict sanitation protocols for pots, growing media, and greenhouse surfaces.
