Description

The Coconut leaf beetle (Brontispa longissima) is a devastating agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This insect represents a significant threat to palm species globally, causing severe damage to both commercial plantations and ornamental landscapes.

The primary hosts of this beetle include various palm species such as coconut palms (Cocos nucifera), oil palms, and betel nut palms. The pest targets the youngest, tightly folded leaves within the palm's terminal bud, where it finds both shelter and a nutritious food source.

The lifecycle of the insect involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Both larvae and adults hide deep within the unfurled leaves, which makes early detection difficult. Under tropical conditions, the generation time is roughly one month, facilitating rapid population growth.

The damage is characterized by distinct necrotic streaks on the leaves. As adults and larvae graze on the epidermal tissue, the leaves become withered, stunted, and brown. Heavy infestations often result in severe crown damage, reduced fruit production, and, in many instances, the eventual death of the palm tree.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Control strategies include:

  • Application of systemic insecticides for severe outbreaks;
  • Biological control using the parasitoid wasp Asecodes hispinarum;
  • Strict quarantine regulations for the movement of palm seedlings;
  • Regular field monitoring to detect initial damage symptoms.
