Bryobia lagodechiana
Bryobia lagodechiana
Description
Bryobia lagodechiana is a species of spider mite belonging to the Tetranychidae family and the Acariformes order. This tiny phytophagous mite is a significant pest in agricultural and horticultural systems, feeding primarily on the sap of leaf cells and causing substantial physiological stress to its host plants.
The pest has a wide range of host plants, frequently infesting fruit trees, berry bushes (such as strawberries and raspberries), and various garden crops. Due to its feeding habits, Bryobia lagodechiana can compromise both the yield and the overall vitality of infected plants, particularly in orchards and commercial berry fields.
The life cycle of this mite consists of several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. Overwintering typically occurs in the egg stage, with eggs deposited in bark crevices or on the undersides of leaves. The mite thrives in warm, dry weather conditions, where the time from egg to adult can be significantly shortened, leading to rapid population explosions.
The damage caused by Bryobia lagodechiana is distinct and easily recognizable by experienced agronomists. Feeding activities result in:
- Chlorotic stippling (white or yellow spots) on the leaf surface;
- Leaf bronzing and necrosis under high infestation pressure;
- Significant reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the plant;
- Stunted growth and premature leaf drop, leading to reduced fruit quality.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective strategy against this mite. Control efforts should focus on cultural practices such as removing infested plant debris and maintaining healthy irrigation levels to reduce plant stress. When chemical intervention is necessary, the application of targeted acaricides is recommended. Rotating chemical classes is crucial to prevent the development of resistance within the mite population.
